Boxes that are easy to unpack

Choosing boxes, packing books, dishes, clothes and furniture, and labelling everything for transport.

Good packing helps during transport and the first days in your new home.

Example label

“Kitchen / mugs and plates / fragile / open on day one” is more useful than “miscellaneous”.

Packing different items

ItemsPreparationWhat to check
BooksSmall, sturdy boxesCan the box be lifted safely?
DishesProtect each item and fill gapsDoes anything move when gently tilted?
ClothesClean boxes, bags or wardrobe boxesAre clothes dry and kept away from liquids?
FurnitureProtect corners and surfaces; keep fittings separateWill it fit through doors and into the lift?

Keep rooms separate

Mixing kitchenware and books makes unpacking harder. Leave a little space and fill it with suitable packing material. Mark items you need immediately.

What to discuss with the mover

Ask about packing requirements for appliances, plants, mirrors and unusual items. Check manufacturers’ transport instructions for large appliances. Do not assume specialist packing is included in a standard booking.
